VOLUNTEER INDONESIA
LIFE IN INDONESIA
Indonesia is a vast equatorial archipelago composed of 17,508 islands extending 5,150 kilometres east to west, between the Indian and Pacific Oceans in Southeast Asia. Many of the islands are mountainous with dense rain forests, and some even have active volcanoes. There is so much diversity among each chain of islands and Indonesians are separated by seas and clustered on islands. With a population of over 238 million people, Indonesia ranks as the world's fourth most populated nation. The largest cluster is on Java, with some 130 million inhabitants. Indonesia is highly diverse, with over 580 languages and dialects and has some of the most hospitable people in our world. It's no wonder Indonesia has so much to offer.
ISSUES FACING INDONESIA
With all the fabulous possibilities this country has to offer, there are also some devastating facts. Indonesia has, and continues to be, constantly hit with natural disasters. These disasters have left devastating effects in many areas across the country. Indonesia’s poor suffer most from the country’s extraordinary food prices because they spend up to 70% of their income on food. This makes them extremely vulnerable to price hikes caused by Indonesia’s protectionist policies, which include a restrictive licensing system, an import quota, and various tariffs and non-tariff barriers to food imports. If Indonesian households were able to purchase their basic food items in neighbouring countries they would save approximately $24.00 USD. This is a tremendous amount, considering that Indonesia’s low-income households have an average monthly income of about $100.00 USD. These protectionist food policies not only keep people poor, they also pull people back into poverty.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Helping hands from concerned individuals like you are important for us to achieve our mission of helping underprivileged children build dreams. As a volunteer on this program, you will get a unique opportunity to provide educational and personal development support to children living in underprivileged circumstances. And also, to promote the empowerment of youth through arts while assisting them to become positive contributors to society. If you choose to volunteer with us in Indonesia, you will be amazed at how welcoming and warm the people really are, even though they have continued to endure so much suffering in their lives. This program is unique in the sense that the volunteering requirements are more extensive. That is because this is a very established program that stretches well beyond the country’s borders. This has impacted children, not just locally, but in other countries throughout the world.
